This weekend, I finally finished binding my Checkmate half-square triangle quilt, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out! The bold, geometric pattern shines beautifully, especially with the fabric choices I went with—Ruby and Bee Bright Blue for the binding and Essex Charcoal for the background. That pop of blue against the rich charcoal adds just the right amount of contrast and makes the quilt feel modern and fresh.
The Checkmate pattern from Fableism is such a joy to sew. It comes together quickly and has just enough movement to keep things interesting, while still being beginner-friendly. I love how versatile this design is—whether you’re making it as a throw, a gift, or like me, a picnic quilt that doubles perfectly for cheering on the sidelines at fall football games. The size and layout make it practical, but it still feels stylish and fun.
I’m especially excited that I have a few Checkmate quilt kits available in the shop—so if this quilt inspires you, you can grab a kit and start your own! They include everything you need to make your very own version of this timeless, modern quilt.
Quilting is always more rewarding when you can imagine the memories your quilt will be part of—and I can already see this one spread out under the autumn trees or tucked around me on chilly bleacher nights.
